Master's Program in Computer Science

Whether it is our smartphone, autonomous driving or an internet search, computer science applications have become an integral part of our lives. From medicine to business administration, from mechanical engineering to biology, from psychology to sociology or even archeology - all spheres of life and science are highly dependent on computer science. The goal of this Master’s programme is to equip you with the theoretical and practical skills needed to contribute to this exciting technological progress.

Our main focuses in computer science studies are:
  • Robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Machine vision and computer graphics
  • Algorithms and navigation
  • Software and security
Characteristics

A very flexible study programme and the large variety of elective courses give you the opportunity to shape your individual profile while building the basis for a successful international career, whether in academia or in industry.

Curriculum

The Master's degree program in Computer Science has a very flexible curriculum. Students acquire in-depth knowledge in various self-chosen IT areas by participating in different courses: Lectures, seminars, a lab course, a study project and the Master's thesis form a personal competency profile in the field of computer science. In the meantime, the personal profile ("Individuelle Studiengestaltung") allows a look outside the box by taking some courses in subjects other than Computer Science.

Students can choose to focus in one of the following specialization areas:
  • Cyber-Physical Systems
  • Artificial Intelligence
In the last semester, students work on their master’s thesis. They are expected to tackle an actual research question in close cooperation with a professor and their staff.

About the Computer Science Department

The Department of Computer Science (IIF) is one of the youngest departments at the university. Situated on a new campus, the Faculty of Engineering features modern facilities including various research labs, computer labs for students as well as WiFi on the whole campus.

IIF currently has 18 professors as well as approximately 110 research assistants working in a total of 20 research groups. They cover a broad spectrum of teaching and research topics which range from computer graphics to artificial intelligence, from algorithms to software technology, and from communication systems to applications in engineering and the life sciences. Approx. 970 students are enrolled in both, undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the Department of Computer Science.

About the University of Freiburg

The University of Freiburg was founded in 1457 as a classical comprehensive university, making it one of the most renowned institutions of higher education in Germany. The 2024 Times Higher Education Ranking has ranked the University of Freiburg 11th in Germany. The structure of the university is multifaceted, ranging from 11 academic faculties - from the humanities and the social and natural sciences all the way to engineering to 20 research centres. This goes to show that we are a dynamic, large-scale institution with a diverse educational offering. Bilateral partnerships, research projects, joint study courses and memberships in international networks such as the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and the European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR) are examples of the university's strong transnational relations. All our students, including those from abroad, can take courses at the Universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Strasbourg (France) without having to enrol. Via the EUCOR mobility grant, they also receive allowances for travel expenses.
