About Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava

The Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS) is presently one of the largest faculties of Comenius University, in both the number of staff members and students.

The basic research and educational units of the Faculty are the Departments and Institutes, which are organised in five sections: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography and Geology. Each section is administered by a Vice-Dean and a Council comprised of the Heads of Departments and Directors of Institutes. Each section has its own specialized library. There are also three departments independent of the Sections (foreign languages, natural science pedagogy, physical culture), two central service-type laboratories, and a biology field station.

Of course, modern university education and research require the widest possible communication and cooperation and thus we encourage not only joint activities within the Faculty but cooperate widely with other faculties of natural sciences of individual universities of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic, with the Institutions of Slovak Academy of Sciences and with other institutions. International exchange and cooperation of our staff and students is extensive and varied and involves not only official projects but also many informal contacts.

Teachers and research workers at the FNS published their papers in well-known international journals. Members of our faculty have contributed to scientific meetings and symposia both in Slovakia and abroad, often as invited and guest lecturers. A number of talks or seminars have been given at the FNS by eminent scientists from abroad.
