    About the Academy

    Svishtov has played an active role in the history of Bulgaria for some nineteen centuries. The past of the Bulgarian people comes to life again in the rich and varied biography of the town. From the ancient town of Nove, dating from the early medieval period, through the dark period under Turkish rule, the bright years of the Bulgarian Renaissance down to the present, Svishtov has been important as a commercial, educational and cultural centre, a centre in the political struggles for national liberation, and the birthplace of key writers and intellectuals. Svishtov is a town of old commercial traditions, outstanding Renaissance figures and rich cultural development. And it is not by chance that the town has become the third largest university centre in Bulgaria. The Academy's benefactor, Dimitar Apostolov Tsenov who provided its endowment occupies a respected place in the ranks of 19 century philanthropists and humanists born in Svishtov. He was born here in 1852 and died in Sofia in 1932. Dimitar Tsenov was a large-scale entrepreneur, merchant and stockowner, an ardent patriot and an advocate of cultural and educational development. On September 1, 1912, Dimitar Tsenov bequeathed his fortune to the citizens of Svishtov, leaving his assets in Svishtov and other parts of the country to the endow of an economic institute in the town. The Academy in Svishtov was formally opened on November 8th, 1936, marking the beginning of the development of higher education in the town.

    The “D. A. Tsenov” Academy of Economics takes an appointed and recognizable place in the academic world. The leading positions of the Academy in the system of higher economic education are the result of:

  • demanded and achieved anticipatory development;
  • formed organizational manners and spirit of innovation;
  • pedagogy of cooperation with the students;
  • collaboration with foreign countries without any partiality;
  • entire devotion, sometimes difficult to understand, to Svishtov Alma Mater.

    That is the reason why the Academy is being an attractive and desired partner in Bulgaria and the whole world.

    The Academy of Economics is connected to INTERNET which provides free, efficient, and quick access to the rest of the computerized world. The Data Processing Centre provides first-class computing facilities necessary for administration and teaching in the Academy. Students are given methodological assistance by a team of experts from the Department of Automated Data Processing in the 12 computer labs equipped with modern PCs. A network of more than 100 work stations and several servers has been recently installed. The computer labs are part of this local network and provide access to INTERNET under appropriate authorization. The Academy maintains its own publishing house, issuing textbooks, articles and specialized literature in economics.

    The library is one of the oldest and richest university libraries in the country. Founded in 1939, it is named after the famous bibliographer Prof. Nikola Mihov who was a leading figure in establishing the library and worked there for almost 17 years. The library has four reading rooms with 120 places and more than 192 000 volumes of books and periodicals. The library is connected to the Internet, wich affords opportunities both for individual information search in the library database created in 1992 and for joining in a net with other university libraries.

    There is an Institute for Scientific Research (ISR) in the Academy. Its main purpose is to develop economic research and link it to higher education. A Centre for Scientific Research and Transfer "Barov" Ltd. functions within the framework of the Academy. Its purpose is to conduct scientific research to meet particular practical needs.
